Pablo’s “Paw”nderings

This is how Pablo felt yesterday

Hello my furry friends! Hope you all had a great week. My week was going good..until yesterday It seems my diet isn’t going very well. I got weighed at the vet again. I’m 126 pounds! The vet was not happy at all and said mom has to stop feeding me treats like bacon and cheesies. I don’t know how I’m going to survive without my morning bacon! And I live for cheesies!!!! I’m going to waste away I tell you! Ahhhhh! If you have any diet tips for me, feel free to send them in, I could use all the help and support I can get 😊

The cooler nights have been great for sleeping – I’ve been taking over mom and dad’s bed and dad had to sleep on the couch a few nights this week. I know, I’m spoiled rotten! I guess that’s it for this week, stay cool my friends!

10 Ways Your Life Will Change with a Rottweiler

1.            No personal space: You’ll be followed from room to room, your bed will no longer be yours and sitting on the couch watching tv? Forget it! Your furry friend will be by your side 24 hours a day.

2.            You’ll learn the meaning of Stubborn!!!!: Need to move them off the bed? Ha! It might be easier moving a brick wall. Need them to go for a walk in the rain? Forget it! They won't budge. Rottweilers are inherently stubborn and will resist will all their might. And they do have might! 120 pounds of pure muscle!

3.            You will never finish a meal again: Think you're getting that last bite of your sandwich? Think again... when you see those eyes staring at you then glancing at your sandwich, then back at you... you know who's getting that last bite - not you!

4.            You'll have a friend for life: Rottweilers are fiercely loyal. They pick their favourite 'person' but they are loyal to their whole family. They will protect you wtih their life.

5.            You'll never sit alone on the couch again: yup, you've got a 120-pound lap dog on your hands. Rottweilers love to be close to their humans and they will seize every chance to get close. Whether it's the couch, chair, bed or outside lounge, they'll be there waiting to get comfortable on your lap; whether you're ready or not.

6.            You're going to find fur in every corner! - invest in a good vacuum cleaner.. you'll need it! Even though their fur is short haired, they shed just like a St. Bernard would. You're going to find fur in every corner, behind every nook and cranny and in places where you didn't even know you should vacuum. Get ready!

7.            You’ll have a loyal companion: They are one of the most loyal breeds out there. They will never leave your side, nor will they turn on you in your hour of need. When you need them they'll be there. They are the most loyal friend you could have. Having a bad day? They'll be right by your side, not saying a word, not judging you, just waiting and listening. you can tell them all of your troubles and they'll never leave you.

8.            Built-in security system. Oh pity the crook who breaks into your home! They'll tear him apart piece by piece. Just kidding... invest in a good security system. Although they have a bad reputation, rottweilers can be the biggest babies ever. They would open the door if they could and let the burglars right in and take whatever they want. They may look intimidating but they're just big goofballs at heart.

9.            You’ll want to gaze into those eyes all day long! One look at those soulful eyes, and you'll be giving in to their every whim. Walk in the rain? Sure, let's go! Leftover steak? Absolutely! Ice cream? You bet? Only the hardest of hearts will be able to resist those puppy dog eyes.

10.          Companion for life. I know, it’s listed twice but I cannot stress this enough: when you have a rottweiler, you'll have a loyal companion for life. Always by your side and never wavering, your dog will be your best friend and give everything they have to you, their human. They will love you with all they've got, protect you and will never leave your side.

Having a large dog is a lot of work, but it can be the most rewarding thing you do in your entire life. Make sure you know what you're getting into, it's not for the faint of heart and you will have to make some adjustments, put in the time for training and make sure you and your entire family are ready for the most hilarious adventure of a lifetime! Oh and get some air freshener - they can be gassy!

Yes they are intimidating - they are big and strong and powerful. But they are some of the biggest goofballs on the planet. They love to run and play, and will get the zoomies at the oddest times. They are not long-distance runners - they'll run for a few minutes and then literally plop themselves down and sleep for 2 hours. And they can snore! They'll give grandpa a good run for his money that's for sure.

Seek out a vet that is not afraid of these big babies, some are hesitant to treat them because of their reputation. Get their nails done regularly and invest in a brush and spray to keep them looking their best.

How to Rehome your Pet Responsibly and Humanely

Rehoming your pet is a painful, but sometimes necessary decision. People consider rehoming pets due to the loss of a job or home, illness or injury, pet behavior issues, and natural disasters. For active duty service members, assignment to a duty station where personal pets are not allowed often means giving up their beloved pets.

This article offers tips on alternatives to rehoming, as well as how to find your dog or cat the best possible next home if you have no other options.

 Contact your local animal shelter

Many animal shelters, rescues, SPCAs, humane societies, and municipal animal controls have programs to keep people and pets together. At minimum they can often refer you to credible resources in your own community that may be able to help.

However, surrender prevention programs are on the rise nationwide. As the name suggests, the main goal is to keep people and pets together. These initiatives offer a range of support services to prevent animals from entering shelters and ensure that a shelter is a refuge of last resort.

Surrender prevention programs can include pet food pantries, low- or no-cost veterinary care, and even short- or long-term pet fostering. Some provide help with training if behavior issues are the reason you are thinking about giving up your pet.

These interventions are often enough to help tide people through a life transition or personal challenge without having to give up their pets.

 The doctor is in

Speak with your pet’s veterinarian. He or she knows your pet and may have other clients who are looking to add a pet to their households. In addition, your veterinarian will know which prospective new homes are best suited to care for your pet’s medical or special needs.

Some veterinary practices allow clients to post flyers in their office to help dogs and cats find new homes. Ask if this is permissible.

Be wary of social media

Avoid personal or classified ads at all costs, as well as social media posts on any site or page that extends beyond your friends, family, or local community. Never post your pet as “free to a good home” in any forum. Doing so will very likely endanger your pet’s wellbeing and possibly his life.

As tempting as it may seem, rehoming a pet through Craigslist may place your pet in significant peril. Many animals advertised on Craigslist have wound up victims of abuse and neglect, rehomed to backyard breeders, hoarders, dog-fighting rings or other criminal elements. Black cats and kittens rehomed through Craigslist have been found tortured to death.

Classifieds and social media are good options for selling your couch, not finding a loving home for your pet.

 Explore home-to-home services

Home-to-home services help match people seeking new homes for their pets with those who want to adopt. They offer a valuable channel to bypass shelters altogether, allowing those organizations to focus their limited resources on those animals most in need.

Rehome by Adopt-A-Pet is a professional pet matching community. It receives support from Petsmart, Pedigree and other credible organizations in and around the animal welfare space.

Because Adopt-A-Pet is the nation’s largest nonprofit pet adoption website your pet’s profile can be seen by millions of potential pet adopters. Rehome provides detailed tips and checklists on how to create a pet profile, review applications, meet potential adopters, and finalize your pet’s adoption.

In addition, more animal shelters offer rehoming programs as a way to help pets who need to find homes without adding to already overcrowded shelters.
