Pablo’s Ponderings

Hello all of my furry friends! I hope you all had a great Easter weekend! I had sooo much fun! I want to tell you all about it.. all of my favourite people came over - they were so happy to see me and gave me so much attention, I was in heaven. We had a big dinner on Saturday night and I got a little bit of everything - turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, carrots, oh, and even some rainbow chip cake!

Everyone told me how handsome I was and how good I was..(I was on my best behaviour). Here’s a picture of the turkey mom and my aunt made:

The only thing that dampened the day was that it was raining, so we had to stay inside. But we had a great sleepover and I got to snuggle with all of my peeps 🙂 I was sad when they all had to go home.

Last night it snowed and got cold again. Can’t wait till mom and I can sit outside on the patio! I love being in the backyard watching the squirrels, chipmunks and bunnies. Soon the weather will warm up I hope.

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts lately about people wanting to make their own dog food. The main reason of course, is to give superior nutrition and keep their dogs healthy. As it turns out, we’re not all scientists, and although they have the best intentions, people are discovering that perhaps doctor Google isn’t giving them the right mix of ingredients to create balanced, healthy meals for health and longevity.

As always, I’m going to suggest that you talk to your vet before concocting meals for your dog, especially if you’re going to replace commercial food entirely.

The ONE nutrient that your dog may be missing out on by going homemade? Animal protein - particularly chicken, fish and lamb. Take note vegetarians - your dog needs MEAT! 🙂 Good news for dogs, bad news for chickens.

As a general rule and starting point, dogs need 1 gram of protein per 1 pound of weight. So, in Pablo’s case, at 126 pounds, he needs 126 grams of protein per day (I know, I know he needs to go on a diet lol)

Things to keep in mind:

Experiment with different recipes and protein sources until you find something your dog really loves. You can store in airtight containers and keep in the fridge for up to one week, and freeze for up to two months.

Training your puppy takes plenty of time, patience and treats! One of the most important things to teach your new family member is socialization. Here are some tips from the Wake County SPCA:

By the time a puppy is 7 weeks old she should’ve…

 Been in at least 7 different locations (backyard, garage, kitchen, neighbor’s yard, etc.)

 Eaten from at least 7 different containers

 Been held and petted by at least 7 different people

 Taken at least 7 one-mile car rides

 Been in a crate at least 7 times

 Played with at least 7 different kinds of toys

 Walked on at least 7 different substrates (grass, gravel, concrete, etc.)

 Been taken somewhere alone, without mom or littermates, at least 7 times

 Been exposed to at least 7 challenges (climbed on a box, gone through a tunnel, climbed up steps, etc.)

Mighty Mutts Kitchen

Simple Chicken and Rice Dish

Ingredients
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
½ lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into small cubes
½ cup brown rice (see notes if your dog has an upset stomach)
1 cup unsalted chicken broth (I recommend using a broth with no onion or garlic added), can also substitute water
1 tablespoon chopped parsley (I recommend curly parsley)
⅓ cup shredded carrots
⅓ cup frozen peas, thawed

Instructions
Add olive oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add cubed chicken.
Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until chicken is just cooked through.
Stir chicken stock, rice, and parsley into the skillet.
Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Cover skillet and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until rice is cooked and tender
