Hello Dog Lovers! Welcome to this week’s issue of Mighty Mutts.
It’s International Dog Day! This day was founded in 2004 by animal welfare advocate, author and pet lifestyle expert, Colleen Paige. National Dog Day celebrates all breeds and serves to help educate the public on the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year.
So don’t forget to spoil your dog today! Pour on the love, take them for an extra walk (it’s great exercise for you too) and treat them to a car ride, extra bite of your sandwich (just one won’t hurt) and let them know how much you appreciate them! Better yet, bake them a homemade treat, like the one included in this week’s issue, Spinach, Carrot and Zucchini treats.
This week we’re talking about foods that your dog should never eat, and Pablo has some grumblings about his diet (it’s not really going well). Our curated article discusses ways to tell if your dog is overweight and what you can do about it.
Have a great week everyone, summer is winding down; get out and enjoy the weather while you can!

Just Chillin’
Hello my furry friends! I'm a little sad today. Yesterday mom yelled at me and scolded me for getting into the garbage. I know I'm not supposed to but I couldn't help myself. Ever since I’ve been on this diet, I’ve been so hungry!!! I’m wasting away I tell you! I need steak! I need chicken! I need bacon and cookies and cheezies! Whew, sorry, I got carried away there. So anyway, the garbage was just sitting there and mom turned her back, and I could smell leftovers, so I just stuck my head in and grabbed them. But then other stuff came out of the bag too and I made a big mess. When mom saw the mess she was angry, and even called me a 'bad boy'. That made me really sad, so I sulked in front of the back door the rest of the afternoon until Brandon came home. Then mom told him what I did, but he just put his arms around me and that made me feel better.
Mom told me she still loved me and that I was still her 'big dumb dope'. She gave me a big hug and that made me feel better. I'll try my best not to do that again. But honestly, did she have to leave it out where I could get at it? I think she should take some responsibility too! Hmpf

Is My Dog Overweight?
If you suspect your dog may be overweight, it's time to schedule a checkup with your primary vet, who will weigh your pup, perform a thorough examination to gain insight into your canine companion's overall health, and let you know if your dog is overweight based on their build and breed.
Even a few extra pounds can lead to excess weight on your dog's body, and cause joint pain and other painful conditions. These issues may lead to veterinary emergencies or long-term internal health conditions that limit your pet's health and longevity. This is why it's so important to help your dog maintain a healthy weight throughout their lifetime.
If you aren't sure whether you should check in with your vet, here are some signs that may give you some clues as to whether your dog is carrying extra weight.
Consider Your Dog's Fitness Level
Has your dog been panting when walking relatively slowly? You may notice your pooch walking slower or needing to rest more than before.
Feel For Your Dog's Ribs
If your pooch is at a healthy weight, you should be able to feel their ribs without a thick layer of fat covering them. Your dog's chest should be wider than their abdomen, and you should be able to see a noticeable tuck-up from chest to stomach about where their waist should be (see illustration below).
Take a Look at Your Four-Legged Friend's Figure
Overweight dogs will generally have an invisible waistline. You likely won't be able to detect a distinction between the chest and stomach when looking at your dog side-on. See the illustration below for a better idea of how your dog should look from the side.

· 1 cup pumpkin puree
· ¼ cup peanut butter
· 2 large eggs
· ½ cup old fashioned oats
· 3 cups whole wheat flour, or more, as needed
· 1 carrot, peeled and shredded
· 1 zucchini, shredded
· 1 cup baby spinach, chopped
Instructions
· Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat; set aside.
· In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined, about 1-2 minutes.
· Gradually add old fashioned oats and 2 1/2 cups flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky. Add carrot, zucchini and spinach, beating just until incorporated.
· Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.
· Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.*
· Let cool completely.
